Lister Drive Greener Grid Park
Project Details
Project Name: Lister Drive Greener Grid Park
Asset Owner: Statkraft / National Grid
GPS' Client: Statkraft
Completion: April 2023
Project Overview
This is one of several projects across the country that will help the UK build a greener future, reaching its goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Great Britain operates the fastest decarbonising electricity system in the world. Greener Grid Parks deliver a solution to the engineering challenge of removing fossil fuels from the UK's energy supply and maximising the amount of renewable energy that can be distributed through the grid. This helps to both protect the environment, and reduce costs for energy consumers.
The newly energised connection means the specialised synchronous compensators and flywheels at Statkraft’s site are now operational and supplying stability services to help National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) manage system frequency.
The works at the substation, which is adjacent to Statkraft’s Greener Grid Park on Lister Drive, included installing a new disconnecting circuit breaker and upgrading the protection and control software, as well as running a new 275kV cable between the sites to make the transmission network connection.
Scope of Works
NRS Group Ltd was the appointed Balance of Plant (BoP) contractor. On 5/9/2022 Statkraft was advised that the UK business of NRS Group has gone into administration. At this date the installation and cold-commissioning of the BoP scope is largely completed and a new contractor, GPS were immediately appointed to undertake the responsibilities of the Principal Contractor role and to complete the project including 275kV energisation of the BoP substation and management of the commissioning of the High Inertia Synchronous Compensator (HISC) installation and completion of the associated Site Acceptance tests (SATs) by the HISC contractor.
GPS scope of work – Post Contractor Takeover (PC & Commissioning)
PCM Scope
- Principal Contractor duties under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (“CDM Regulations”)
- Health and Safety management (of the construction site and project documentation)
- Environmental management (inc. removal of 2,800m³ of Asbestos contaminated material from site)
- Provision of site security
- Provision of facilities, welfare and amenities during commissioning
Electrical Scope
- Commissioning of 275kV connection from the cable sealing end adjacent to the disconnecting circuit breaker (DCB) in the NGET substation to the stability plant, including sheath test beforehand.
- Commissioning of 13.8kV connections, all control and external wiring connections, and commissioning of the 275kV/13.8kV/13.8kV 140MVA/70MVA/70MVA transformer.
- Commissioning of 275kV high-voltage equipment at the stabilisation facility.
- Commissioning of sundry equipment and components required to interface with other sub-systems and provide a fully functioning facility. [This scope includes, for example, the other ancillary items of scope like bund water control pumps, battery charges, fence control etc.]
- Commissioning of 13.8kV power connections from the 13.8kV transformer connection to the HISCs and auxiliary transformers.
- Commissioning of AC auxiliary power supply consisting of 13.8/0.4kV auxiliary transformers, 400V switchboard, 400V backup generators and to 400V DNO supply.
- Commissioning of a comprehensive protection scheme with IEC 61850 intelligent electronic devices (IED) for the power cables, including connection to substation LAN (S-LAN) for integration into the Employer’s SCADA system, and any connections required for inter-tripping a status reporting to NGET;
- Commissioning of video surveillance (CCTV) equipment including connection to the Employer’s control room.
- Completion of the SCADA IO testing
