Project Overview

NSN Link is a proposed high voltage direct current (HVDC) electricity interconnector with an approximate capacity of 1400 megawatts (MW). It will allow the transfer of electrical power between the UK and Norway, via subsea cables. The interconnector will be bi-directional allowing the import and export of electricity between the UK and Norway.

The UK side of the NSL project comprises a direct buried cable route for the UK Land Section which is approximately 2.5km in length and will consist of two single core 525kV MIND cables which will be installed in the same trench from the Sea/Land Joint Bay to the new Converter Station

Scope of Works

GPS acting on behalf of Prysmian Power Link, will be responsible for the turnkey and complete delivery of the DC onshore cable route which encompasses all aspects of the installation of the HVDC onshore cables, from the new converter station at Blyth (under construction by ABB) to the landfall at Cambois where they will be joined to the subsea HVDC cables at the transition joint bay.

GPS are responsible for all elements of onshore installation design, and pre construction activities necessary to secure the project including:

  • Trial pits, bore holes and exploratory excavations
  • Securing Network Rail Form 001, 002 and 003 signoff
  • All pre-construction surveys and ecological mitigation activities
  • All required documentation/drawings for discharge of planning conditions

GPS will undertake and provide two HDD’s on the project, and assume responsibility for all required drum logistics, installation design and project execution for the 70t drums and onshore cable installation. Complete project management and technical delivery of the scheme from contract award to closure encompassing:

  • All applicable temporary works for route crossings, cable installation and termination/jointing scaffolding
  • All required permanent works designs and installation for transition joint bays, land joint bays, HVDC termination support structures and onshore cable routing
  • Provision of all site welfare, jointing installation and materials/logistics support
